Brian May used the Red Special’s unusually broad pickup palette across the track, including a neck-and-middle in-phase clean texture under the piano, an out-of-phase neck-and-middle main solo, and changing pickup combinations in the hard-rock section. The fundamental chain was treble booster into a cranked Vox AC30, but exact knob positions were not published, so the settings below are representative. Use a sixpence-style metal pick or a hard pick for the incisive attack. Treat the solo as a composed vocal melody, and keep the hard-rock riff tighter and less saturated than a modern high-gain tone.
