Matt Bellamy uses a heavily processed, almost glitchy distortion. Whammy pedal and tight distortion define this riff.
Bellamy has said that the song’s abrasive fuzz guitar was recorded direct rather than through a conventional miked amplifier, although the precise fuzz or processor remains disputed. This preset therefore uses a deliberately generic direct-injected fuzz block rather than falsely identifying a Big Muff or Fuzz Factory as certain.
